Some things are best when they stay the same. Like our earth’s climate – we sure wish that would stop changing. But most things are way better when they change now and then. Like ice cream flavors. Or your underpants.
If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably noticed that we’ve changed the artwork on our pint containers a few times over the years. And if you’ve been around as long as we have, you might even remember when the names of the flavors didn’t even appear on the sides of the pint, only on the lids:
That was back in 1980, when our co-founders first started packing their wonderful, groundbreaking ice cream into pints.
That’s right. When our first Scoop Shop opened in 1978, it was cups and cones only. (Well, and crêpes and soups and some other weird offerings.) For a while, our co-founders sold their ice cream in bulk to local restaurants as well. But one day Ben had an idea: what if they could pack their ice cream into 1-pint containers and sell them in grocery stores so that people could enjoy Ben & Jerry’s at home? It was genius.
In February 1980, Ben’s idea became a reality, and they started packing up pints to sell at local grocery stores. Today, you’d be hard pressed to find a grocery store in the US not stocking a hearty supply of Ben & Jerry’s pints.
